How long does sperm live?

Once ejaculated how long does sperm have to fertilize an egg, I think an
egg can only be fertilized within the first 24 hours of ovulation, but
what is the life span of sperm before it can not fertilize an egg?
Someone told me that sperm can live up to 3-5 days, I thought they died
off quickly ... can someone answer this question
