Re: Thalassemia?From: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 26 May 1999 14:18:16 EDT
I'm 30 weeks pregnant. I went through the same scare. I am also Italian. The reason that my Perinatologist ran the tests was because my baby has an enlarged gallbladder. This is usually a sign that there may be a blood disorder. Thalassemia can be a terrible disorder if it is the Major kind. That is EXTREMELY rare from what was explained to me by several drs. I had called our pediatrician to ask him more about it. There are two types of Thalassemia. Major and minor. I will tell you I did a lot of worrying for nothing. The blood work took 2 weeks to come in w/ the results and it was negative. (This is my second child also, first is fine). I was told not to worry until I received the results but I could help but worry. I will keep her in my thoughts. Best of luck. Danielle
