Causes of polyhydramnios

Hello,

After I posted my reply to Darlene about fundal height measurements this morning, I went for my biophysical profile. The AFI was 33, which the perinatologist said was considerably high for where I am in pregnancy (34+ weeks). Other than the high fluid level, everything looks great with this baby, including good movements in my kick counts and reassuring test results from NSTs and BPPs (both 8 of 8 so far). The only other 'weird' sign is higher than normal fundal height measurments in third trimester (anywhere from 2 to 7 cm above my weeks). (That, and the fact that I feel HUGE and everyone tells me how HUGE I look, including a couple of my midwives.)

So, my question is what can be some of the causes of this high fluid level? No signs of hydrops or neural tube defects have been found. (I've had one early u/s, a level II at 21 weeks, and BPPs at 30 and 34 wks, and have been doing NSTs since 30 weeks.) I read in a maternity nursing text that obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract can be a cause, but it didn't elaborate. Would they see that in a BPP?

BTW, I'm 28 years old and this is my 3rd pregnancy in 3 years. My first son was stillborn at 31 weeks and was 4 lbs 1 oz (unknown causes) and my second was born healthy at 39 weeks at 9lbs 5 oz. I was 'average' weight at birth, somewhere around 7 1/2 lbs.

Any input you can offer will be appreciated. I've searched the archives but haven't found much on this.

Thanks!
