Time frame of conception!From: Kathy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 23 May 1999 18:29:09 -0500 (CDT)
It is my understanding that a egg can only be fertilized within the first 24 hours of ovulation ... my brothers wife took an ovulation test and said it was her time to conceive, she had sex with my brother that one time only and for several weeks following her self test pregnancy tests came up negative. She then went to her ob-gyn and her pregnancy was confirmed postitive, the dr stated that the date she and my brother gave did not match up with the size of the fetus, it seemed a week too small. The dr told them that maybe they were off with her time of ovulation and that sperm had a life span of 3-5 days, that is where I am concerned, doesn't sperm die very rapidly, and is it possible for a sperm to have made contact with a ripe egg but not start the fertilization process till several days later, ups to about a week. I spoke with my ob-gyn and he seemed quite puzzled by the circumstances I had stated, and he thought that maybe he felt that this couplemay have only mis-stated the actual date of intercourse which would have caused thid pregnancy.
