cervical sweep during labour

I am expecting my second baby, and there are certain things about my first labour I would wish not to repeat. I was in labour for many hours and in the end I was induced, but one of the most traumatic things about the whole experience was the 'sweeps' the midwives carried out, and all the internal examinations. How necessary are these? Would it be wise to refuse them next time? What exactly are thes sweeps for? They are excruciating!

Thank you.
