I am sorry to hear about your loss. I went through a similar situation in November 1998. We made the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy at 20 weeks. The baby had a severe form of Spina Bifida, which is also a neural tube defect. We went through genetic counseling, and I was advised to take a total of 4 mg of Folic Acid a day starting at least a month prior to conception and through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. I am taking a Pre-Natal vitamin which has 1 mg of Folic Acid and an additional 3 mg of Folic Acid. I was also advised to wait at least 3 months before trying to conceive. As far a your question about the sinus infection. Neural tube defects are Multifactorial, which means there can be genetic, environmental, or other unknown causes. I did a great deal of research on Neural Tube Defects, and did read that high maternal fever early in pregnancy can contribute to NTD. I myself had a viral infection with a high fever at 6 weeks of pregnancy (4 weeks of development). This is about the tine the Neural tube and brain are forming. I feel that this contributed to the Spina Bifida in my baby. I am now 9 weeks pregnant. I will have the AFP test done as well as a Level II Ultrasound at 16 weeks. I am extremely reserved about this pregnancy. I still have a 1 in 33 chance of having another baby with a NTD.
