Since they don't teach about pelvic prolapse in health classes, I'm not surprised that this is a shock to you. One of the most common, and most bothersome, aspects of giving birth is that the cervix and uterus can fall towards the opening of the vagina. Although they rarely fall completely out (but they can), it can produce an uncomfortable sensation and can lead to urinary incontinence. In your wife's case, the weight of the uterus is pushing it towards the vaginal opening. It probably will not fall out, but it may cause a weird sensation during urination, bowel movements, and especially during intercourse. It is almost never harmful to the baby (or the mom), and can, if necessary, be corrected 6-8 weeks after delivery by use of a pessary (kind of like a modified diaphragm) or by vaginal surgery.

This can happen after even one birth, and it's the reason why so many of my patients who are also doctors try to get me to perform a c/section for them. They are simply afraid of ending up with a prolapsed uterus later in life.

Best wishes, and good luck with the pregnancy!
