Gaining too much weight?

From: Christine (anonymous@obgyn.net)

I am 12w2d today. I have already gained 7lbs. My pre-pregnancy weight was 118 and I am 5'7" so I was a little underweight to start with. I emailed my doctor and he said the average is 1-2lbs a month and about 26lbs for the duration of the pregnancy (not sure how that adds up, but. . .) My question is: should I cut back on my eating or not worry about it? I'm not eating a lot of junk food or anything, but I do eat larger portions now, as for the first time in my life I'm really HUNGRY! My husband thinks that someone has taken his wife away, since in the past he's always had to remind me to eat. At what point should I be concerned I'm gaining too much? My doctor also said that it's better to gain too much than not enough, but I want things as ideal as possible for my baby.

Thanks, Christine
