Nancy- First of all, I'm sorry that you have had to go through two miscarriages. It is very abnormal to have second-trimester miscarriages, and even more abnormal to have two in a row. While it is likely that the gender makes no medical difference, there are a number of medical conditions that can cause recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). Your doctor should absolutely investigate this. Here are some suggestions: Blood work: * ANA to rule out antinuclear antibodies. * Anticardiolipin and antiphospholipid antibodies. * Maternal and paternal chromosome testing to rule out a balanced translocation with either of you. * Possibly: rule out diabetes. * Saline ultrasound or hysterosalpingogram to rule out a problem with the uterus itself. There are a few other advanced (and controversial) tests that your doctor may order. A treatable diagnosis is possible in over 50% of cases (maybe more in the case of second trimester losses like yours). So, please see your doctor. If he or she is not comforable evaluating RPL, you should ask for a referral to a doctor (gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist) who managest this condition. Best wishes,
