That definitely could happen. I had a life-threatening condition during my pregnancy called HELLP Syndrome. The only treatment is to deliver the baby. I was fortunate that I was far enough along in my pregnancy that although my daughter had to stay in the NICU for 2 weeks she is fine now. Sometimes the condition comes on earlier and the babies don't survive. I am sure there are other conditions that could be life threatening, also. Lori
