My first son was born at 37 weeks. Started with water breaking before contractions, fully dilated < 3 hours later, baby born after about 2 hours pushing, and it only took that long because he was posterior and got stuck on my pubic bone. Early delivery combined with speedy labor raised his "index of suspicion" and he wants to have the opportunity to catch any signs of a possible earlier delivery.

I realize this is far from foolproof, and that I could go into labor after lunch, but I do appreciate him being cautious. I certainly want to do everything possible to ensure a full-term baby, and this is relatively minor inconvenience.

The OB that delivered my son had not checked me during office visits, so I have no idea if there were any warning signs of impending labor the first time.

Thanks, Andrea
