Re: drug testing part of prenatal care? From: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 30 Apr 1999 17:48:25 PDT
I too work in a postpartum/well baby nursery setting and definitely am not happy to see anyone take these risks with their fetus, but I wish to highly commend you on stopping smoking marijuana. Since you are only 4 months pregnant, the infant has a good chance on not being affected by your mistake. So, good for you! In reference to the drug testing being routine, that may vary from state to state. I do know in Missouri, you must obtain written consent from a patient for alcohol or drug testing unless it is life threatening (ie. overdose, etc., so the can decide how to treat you.) Due to your history, they will probably due testing on the infant at birth. They do not have to get consent for this because they are acting in the best interest of the child. If you do not use marijuana and you refuse to be around others who do, the baby should test negative and childred and family services would have no grounds to take your child. Be aware some have tested positive from second hand smoke. So be very cautious. Hope this helps. KG On Fri, 30 Apr 1999 13:45:54 -0500, me wrote:
