Three Cords?

I gave birth to a healthy baby boy a month ago. The strange thing is that he had three umbilical cords coming from the placenta (they merged into one cord a couple of inches above his belly button). One of the cords was very long and had knotted into a pretzel shape around his neck.

Can anyone tell me what would cause three cords instead of just one? The baby was small - just 6 lbs 1 oz. - but otherwise perfect!

This has been driving me crazy!
