Re: Progesterone Supplements

I was wondering if you ever found out anything about continuing to take Crinone. I too am taking Crinone. I had a miscarriage last November because of a low progesterone level. This time blood tests at about 6 wks showed a progesterone level of 7. My OB put me on Crinone and said that another blooed test was not necessary. I just read in the booklet that came with Cronin about the possible birth defects and am very concerned. My doctor failed to mention this to me. He assured me that it would have no effect on the baby, but I am not so sure. I am very concerned! I now want to stop taking it immediately. I know my ob will not be pleased. I would appreciate it very much if you could respond. (I am now about 7.5 weeks) Claudia

I asked my Ob (he is a perenatologist who I trust completely) about the printed birth defects. He said by law they have to mention any problems in the lab animals tested but the instances of problems were minimal and there is no telling if the problems were caused by the crinone or were natural defects so he eased my mind about that. I continued taking the crinone until 10 weeks - the doctor did not do another blood test and when I asked why, was told that even if the levels rise to a safe number, my body would probably not produce the progesterone naturally and that at 10 weeks, the placenta begins producing its own progersterone which is why they can take you off the crinone at 10 or 11 weeks. Although I was nervous about taking the gel, I am glad I continued. I am now 17 weeks along and feel that the crinone probably helped save this pregnancy. By the way, I believe a level 7 is VERY low and progesterone supplements are probably very important to help maintain your pregnancy. I wish you luck! Keep me posted. Amanda
