Re: Sciatica - rest or exercise?

Hello I am not a doctor and I don't know how they will respond but I can tell you my experience. I have had sciatic problems since my teens (I am 27 now). I am in my 35th week and started having more frequent sciatic problems in my 3rd month. I exercise 4 days/week still and have throughout the discomfort (I do the stair climber for 30minutes and then do a cool down walk for 5). Anyway, although it sounds strange, my sciatic pain goes away with/after exercise and is actually worse the day after I DON'T exercise. I truly believe that the exercise helps. About 2 months ago I started to ice my hips for 15 minutes after I exercise and believe this contributes signficantly to lessening any discomfort. By the way, in my 5th month I tried swimming a couple of times instead of stair climbing and found that the sciatic pain got worse. I don't know why since swimming is supposed to be so great during pregnancy. Maybe it has do to with the different types of joints movements or maybe I am just some strange case. Sorry this is so long. I really would suggest you try and ice for 15 minutes after exercise and see if this helps. Tina
