Your healthcare provider can tell the difference between your BH and regular contractions because *real* contractions bring about cervical change.

In my past pregnancies, BH felt like an all-over tightening and release (tho some were quite uncomfortable). Regular contractions started out low and in the back working their way to the front.

It's easiest to tell the difference in retrospect. While you are having them, at times it can be difficult to distinguish between the two, until you are in active labor.
