In my personal experience, B-H contractions feel like a tightening but are relatively painless. A real labor contraction takes that tightening and adds a menstrual cramp like pain and/or a lower backache that intensifies with time. What makes it tricky is that towards the end of your pregnancy B-H cx can start hurting a little bit. A good rule of thumb (I think) is that you can start thinking they are real when you are having trouble walking and talking through them. karen
