It depends on the type of ovarian cyst. Most women (please correct me if I'm wrong, docs!!) have follicular cysts which happen when the follicle that the ovum is released from forms and continues to grow usually until your period arrives when it ruptures. Many women have them and never even know it until an OB feels one during a routine pelvic exam. Some women (myself included) get them and it HURTS and when they rupture it is agony. I had them as a teen and had lots of problems with severe menstrual cramps, mittleschmerz(sp) etc... had a laparoscopy at 17 to rule out more serious conditions. After I started having children (no fertility probs here- 4 children in less than 6 years) my problems decreased greatly. I still have cramps and mittlescmerz but it is NOTHING compared to what I used to endure. If you do have cysts inquire as to what type and then take your questions from there.
