Fear of sex during pregnancyFrom: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Apr 1999 20:07:09 -0500 (CDT)
Is it common for women to be a little fearful of sex during the latter part of pregnancy? I am finding that I am a little scared to have sex now (28 weeks) because I am scared of causing preterm labor. I am not consider high-risk for pre-term labor, but the B-H contractions that seem to be accompanying sexual stimulation scare me. I didn't have this fear with my first pregnancy (but I also didn't have braxton hicks during sex), but I delivered at 37 weeks after we had sex that morning that caused cramps. So I think I have concluded that sex + contractions = delivery, even though I know that is not rational and there is no proof that sex causes labor. Needless to say, my husband is having a difficult time understanding my unfounded fear. If the doctor thought I was high-risk and advised against sex, he would be 100% supportive. But right now he thinks I am just being selfish and unreasonable -- making excuses (sex has been a sore spot between us for a long time). Is my fear completely irrational? Do many women have the same fear during the last trimester? Is there ever a time when it is advisable to avoid sex during the last trimester? Thanks.
