Re: Natural Childbirth

Hi Kimberly, This was also a choice I made with my second pregnancy. I've had many friends who end up being delivered by a Dr. they've never met, i.e. whoever is on call that night. My advice is this: Remember that midwives work closely with a physician. They are terrific for a normal healthy pregnancy. However, if you end up becoming a 'medical' patient, a patient with problems not immediately related to your pregnancy, you will be seeing the O.B. I loved the midwives at the practice, but ended up seeing the O.B., who was not someone I related to at all. Make sure the O.B. who works with your midwives is someone with whom you feel comfortable. By the way, my friends who have delivered with midwives, all in birth centers, have much happier experiences than my friends with O.B.s in hospitals. The quality of care seems to have a lot more continuity and awareness of the mother as an individual. By the way, I'd check with another midwife, as pain relief is usually available, but may not always be the epidural you're wanting at that moment. A lot of birth centers have evening classes during which pain management is addressed. I'm sure lots of us on this list will have thoughts on this one! Valerie
