Natural Childbirth

Kimberly, This comes from a mother, not a medical professional. I gave birth to my son "naturally" and plan to do the same with the next one, due in July. I found the whole process of birth to be exciting, exhilirating and powerful. I felt like the strongest, most amazing person in the world as I labored to bring my son into the world. Those strong feelings overshadowed the "pain"-- a word I don't like to use, since it sounds so negative. If someone asked me, "Would you like to feel the most intense pain you've ever felt, or would you like to be numb," I would probably go with numb. But after my birth experience, I wouldn't even consider pain medication for birth. That's not to say that giving birth is a walk in the park. It's hard work. Everyone has a different threshold of intensity, which is why there are as many different birth experiences as there are mothers. Natural, drug-free childbirth is not something that will just happen. You must be completely committed to it, read as much as you can and take classes in preparation. I used the Bradley method, and was very pleased with the outcome. Talk in-depth with a nurse-midwife or two, get suggestions for reading materials and maybe the names of some other mothers you can talk to. Then you can decide what's right for you. Have a happy pregnancy and a safe and joyous birth experience!
