Actually, you will not be lying there with it in your back. Its just like an IV, they use the needle to insert the very small flexible plastic tube, then the needle is removed, the tubing left in place and taped in place. You will first be given a smaller shot to numb the area before the actual epidural is inserted.

This is definitely not as bad as it sounds! I am a total chicken when it comes to any type of shot/needle, but while in labor I was yelling for it!! A few seconds is all it takes to have it put in, nothing compared to the hours of labor you could be in.

Laugh if you will, but..... Sometimes I wish I knew which was worse, the epidural, or them peeling the tape off my back that held it there! When your already in pain, you dont really notice as much, cause you want something for it, but after its all over....that tape hurts!
