Hyperechoic Bowel

I hope that someone can help my husband and I. Yesterday, I went to the doctor for an ultrasound and was told that our baby appears to have a hyperechoic bowel.

After a lot of discussion with my husband last night and today, we are becoming more and more curious about the possible indications of that determination.

We know that it is found in 5 conditions (Downs Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Trisomy 13, swallowing of blood, and fetal infection), but are not aware of any others. Our baby was conceived through IVF (ICSI), so prior to the procedure, we were screened for CF.

There were no other indications that were determined, but our doctor is sending us to a Genetic Counselor for a possible amnio, which we are both very leary of, due to the possibility of miscarriage or infection.

Can you enlighten us what the chances of a normal pregnancy with the hyperechoic bowel? The doctor said that sometimes it will just "disappear" by the next ultrasound.

We are also concerned because I am already 19 weeks along, and the doctor is having trouble locating a genetic counselor that is on our insurance that can get us in before April (that's when they say is the first that they can get us is).

We were told that it is almost "too late" to have an mnio. What is the reason that it is termed as "too late"? If we don't have it done now, what other problems may that cause? Does the test lose it's ability to reach a definitive conclusion if you are "too late"?

If it is a fetal infection, what can be done? Can my having had a bladder infection and a yeast infection have caused a fetal infection?

Thank you for your time. Any further information that you can give us is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Ann P. McNally
