Basically, of all women who deliver at age 34, 1 in 500 will have a child with Down syndrome and at age 35 it is about 1 in 365. The reason that amniocentesis is offered at age 35 is that the risk of amniocentesis is about equal to the risk of having a child with Down syndrome. For an individual pregnancy, one must consider the risk that the parents are willing to accept.
