I know it is possible, because we just had an 18-year-old woman deliver a baby here in Maine. She, too, did not have insurace, and wanted to have her birth at a birth center. She sought out help from this group that I belong to (a group of doulas, chilbirth educators, midwives, and moms), and through us, she was able to find someone who was willing to attend her birth free of charge. I offered her my services as a doula, and I am in doula training, and would have loved the opportunity to work with her. However, she had so many other offers, that I didn't get the chance!

She did wind up delivering in the hospital, but that was okay (labored at the birth center for quite a while).. things just worked out that way. But the plans were laid out and the support was there for her.

All she had to do was ask, and lots of helping hands were extended. The difficult part is finding the right place to start asking...

Good luck to your sis... and just remember - babies come out, insurance or not! She will do great!
