Confused new motherFrom: jb (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 8 Mar 1999 22:13:28 -0600 (CST)
I'm posting this for my sister since her household does not have net access. Also, I'm sorry if this gets posted twice. There was an error in my browser when I tried to submit it last time. I'm so glad I copied before I submitted... My sister just recently found out that she is pregnant. She is 20 and engaged to be married in the fall. She tells me that she and her fiancee have been having protected sex so this pregnancy was pretty much unplanned. She only makes about 12k/year (if that) while her fiancee is soon to be making 55k. However, they do have some debt (how much, I don't know but enough to where they are now concerned about money and how they are going to make it) He has insurance while she does not. He was planning on adding her to his policy after they got married so that when they did plan on getting pregnant, they would be covered. But now this. They nor I know of an insurance co. that will cover a woman already pregnant, so their only option (as far as anyone close to my sister - family and a few friends - know) is to get public assistance. Since she is not married and making as little as she is, I'm sure she will have no problem getting it. The only concern then would be the fact that that assistance would end 2 months before the baby is due since that is when they will be getting married. And again, there is the problem with my sister's fiancee not being able to put her on his insurance because she will then be about 7 mos. pregnant. So basically here is my question (questions?) (NOTE: My sister lives right outside of New Orleans, LA) * Where can she go (in general or specifically if someone knows) to find out about getting assistance for prenatal care? * What kind of assistance is out there for unwed, pregnant soon-to-be-mothers? * Without insurance (since they won't have any) how much do the hospital bills run for the delivery of a child? * What good resources are there on the net? I did a few searches on Yahoo and Altavista but didn't come up with anything good. I was looking up info on "pregnancy welfare assistance" and "cost of pregnancy" (note: I'm not that great with the search engines yet. <g>). This was the only good site I was able to find. Also anything you feel like interjecting would be welcome. She is very confused and we, as her family, want to be there for moral and emotional support. Unfortunately, we don't have many answers. She doesn't want to consider abortion until she knows all the facts and it turns out that they just won't be able to make it if they have a child. Thank you for your time, for reading this far and for any help you might be able to provide. a0
