This is a theory that has been proposed to try and reduce the incidence of a potentially bad birth problem called shoulder dystocia. The problem is that several studies have shown that there is no improvement in this problem by sectioning everyone at a specific fetal weight. Therefore, it is not the standard of care as defined by ACOG to perform an elective C/S for a specific fetal weight.
