Re: Billing's MethodFrom: Nikki (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 21 Feb 1999 21:06:35 -0600 (CST)
I have been using this method of birth control for the past 7 years with great success. I use it in conjunction with the calendar method. Basically, the cervical mucous changes throughout the month. During an infertile period, the mucous tends to be white and dry feeling, i.e. no stickiness. Just before ovulation, the mucous becomes clearer and stickier. If you put it between two fingers and move the fingers apart it is a little like egg white and forms a sticky string. After ovulation, it returns to white and non sticky. By using this method and tracking your period on the calendar (ovulation usually occurs 14 days before a period, regardless of the cycle length), I have found it to be a very effective form of birth control. I have had two children since using this method - both planned. I have used it since the birth of my third child who is now nearly two and still breastfeeding. The other thing I notice is that just before I ovulate, I have a sharp pain for a few hours on my right side. Always a sign for me to start checking the mucous.
