Ultrasound CANNOT always determine the sex of a baby -- the position of the baby may make it impossible to get a good look between the legs. Sex as determined by ultrasound is not always accurate either; a loop of umbilical cord between the legs has been mistaken for a penis more than once, leaving some poor girls to live in blue rooms with footballs and baseballs on the wallpaper! Ultrasounds are also not done just to determine sex, unless there is a family history of sex-linked genetic disorders. My suggestion: wait until the baby is born and the announcement of "It's a..............!!!" If you need an ultrasound later in pregnancy for any medical indication, by all means ask the tech to look for the gender.
