Re: fetal demiseFrom: Carolyn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 19 Feb 1999 13:31:10 -0600 (CST)
Siobhan (which, BTW, is my daughter's middle name!), I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain you must be going through. I'm not familiar with intestinal herniation, but my niece (she will be 3 in June) was born with amniotic banding syndrome. The bands affected her fingers mostly. She was born missing middle, ring and pinky finger on her right hand and a portion of her index finger. On her left, she was missing a portion of her pinky and her middle finger. A band had wrapped around her ring finger, but not tight enough to sever the digit. She also had a band around her ankle which isn't noticible to the eye, but you can feel the scar tissue. Two of her toes were also "webbed". Madeline has been through several operations and functions like everyone else. My SIL had another baby this past Aug and there was no banding on this baby. Because of Madeline, she was considered a higher risk and went through a level 2 US. Dr Harvey, on the women's issues forum board, answered some of my questions regarding this phenomeon. Do a find on Amniotic Banding. I was concerned with my last pregnancy because, what my SIL was told was that it was most likely the result of a small tear in the amniotic sac that repaired itself and left "fibers" hanging on the inside which wrapped around her fingers. I asked my Dr about ABS and he said that there was no conclusive evidence about why this happens. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.
