Re: One more reference on Cytotec & PitFrom: Christopher (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 15 Feb 1999 13:37:06 -0500
I'd like to thank everyone for their opinion, references and help regarding the Cytotec, Cervidil, Pitocin issue. If there is one thing I have learned for SURE is that this is definately not a cut and dry issue. Of course, I am hoping that I go into spontaneous labor which is obviously the best scenario. I am very grateful to be more informed though about these agents. I do think that I'll agree with my midwife and we'll go the Cervidil route first. It worked before and I know how it feels-kind of the devil you know( Cervidil) vs. the devil you don't know(Cytotec). If it doesn't work this time then I think she and I will have some talking to do. I really am hoping to avoid the Pitocin because I have had that twice before and while I don't believe the contractions actually hurt more there was a definate feeling of lack of control. To you L&D nurses out there-I love you guys to BITS-I've always had the greatest nurses when in labor-but when you all walk in to crank up the pit every 1/2 hr it's really hard not to hate you with every fiber of my being:) because I KNOW I'll be in more pain within minutes and YOU did it to me, at least with regular labor I have no one else to blame:). For the poster who mentioned the bonding factor regarding pit-anecdotes are not evidence but in my personal experience I had no trouble bonding with my "pit babies" even considering one was a C-sectiona dn one had slight RDS. They also nursed well too. The one thing that was different (emotionally) between my pit babies and my Cervidil baby was that I didn't cry after my pit babies were born-I was ecstatic and happy but didn't cry. After Ian (Cervidil) was born I cried a river. I don't know if it was the rush of having an essentially natural delivery or maybe the pit had previously inhibited something. Physically I felt a thousand times better after my no-pit, no epidural delivery then previously BUT my first VBAC was 13 1/2 hrs(with almost three hours of pushing) and my second was 5 hours with 20 minutes of pushing. BIG difference. Anyway....thanks again and I'll let y'all know what happens when all is said and done. Karen Please don't let this degenerate into a OB vs. midwife war-that certainly wasn't my intention. At least to me, both views are equally informational and necessary. I wouldn't want to hear one without hearing the other.
