Re: ultrasound/complicationsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSat, 30 Jan 1999 16:49:12 EST
I am writing about your ultrasound test that you recently had. I am an ultrasound practicioner and am writing based onmy knowledge of that. I am not a doctor, but I am highly skilled in ultrasound. From the information you have given me I doubt that there is anything wrong with your baby. I feel bad that you havehad such a bad ultrasound experience. Unfortunately, at this time there is no laws or regulation in place as to who does ultrasound in the US and who knows the training or skills of the people that did your ultrasound. First, the kidney problem. There is a condition called a UPJ obstruction, which is narrowing of the tube that leads out of kidney. I wish I knew of the measurements of the fluid retained in the kidney and then I could tell you more about this. We will many times see a fluid collection in the kidney that is approximately 1cm or less, which can be a normal finding, and is not a UPJ obstruction. This small fluid collection is actually thought to be from the increased progesterone levels that are circulating in pregnancy that cause smooth muscle to relax. It also causes mom's bowel to relax (problems with constipation), and her bladder and kidneys as well as the baby's. So occasionally there will be some "hydro" (that's slang for fluid in the kidney). Depending on what size they got for this fluid/cyst in the kidney this is what it probably is. I am thinking that is probably what is going. If it is a UPJ, that is easily correctable also, once the baby is born. The second thing you mentioned is the "bright" papillary muscle. That is a normal thing we see frequently in a fetal heart. It is a no big deal. As ultrasound technology is getting better we are seeing more stuff and this is just one of those things. We usually see these on women who scan well, who are thin. Is your wife??? The slang name for this is "golf ball" in the ventricle. I have a really good friend who we saw both of these things on in the ultrasound exam. Her baby was born in October, fat and happy!!! I would try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy and expect a healthy baby. Do you know what you're having? God Bless. Audrey
