Re: Fibroids and PregnancyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSat, 30 Jan 1999 16:35:56 EST
I am replying to your inquiry regarding fibroids. I am an ultrasound practicioner, not a doctor, and am replying from the knowledge I have based on ultrasound. Fibroids are frequently seen , and with pregnancy. Approximately half of the women over 30 have fibroids in their uterus, so with more women waiting to get pg in their thirties we are seeing more fibroids with pregnancy. Their is a SLIGHT risk that it will cause problems with the pg, but unlikely. The two things to worry about is the location, which you said yours was high and at top of uterus. This is good because it won't block the birth canal. The second concern is if the placenta attaches to the fibroid. A fibroid is very vascular and bllod thirsty and it could rob the placenta of the blood it needs to shunt to the baby. Seldom does the fibroid interfere with placental perfusion. I know hundreds of women who have fibroids and had normal healthy pregnancies. I have children, but my husband and I would lik to have another and I too have fibroids. It's the least of my worries!!! Try to relax and enjoy your pg!!!! God Bless, Audrey
