Ann, I also have been through this myself in 1993. I had no idea that I was having twins until the spotting started (at 8 weeks, 1 week after I found out I was pregnant), and I had both an abdominal and vaginal ultrasound. It may not help, but I will take a stab at this. The way I see it is that one fetus must have had some abnormality, and with the doctor telling me that in my case(identical same sac) that I would only have a 50% chance of carrying to term anyway, I think in some way it was best. If I had carried longer, I could have lost both, but I didnt, I now have a beautiful 4 1/2 year old little girl!
