I had a mediolateral episiotomy and a third degree extension. Therefore, quite a few stitches. There was a lot of swelling, bruising and 3 days later an impaction that had to be digitally removed. My doctor was gentle and no additional damage was done to the anal sphincter. However,my stitches lasted 5 weeks.(I was taking baths twice a day) I'm curious to know why. In the hospital I was told they would last 5-6 days! This happened 5 months ago. At the time I didn't think to ask my doctor. Needless to say, everything healed perfectly, I have no residual problems, and a hardly noticable scar.
