Breast-feeding and loss of milk

I have been breast-feeding my son for three months and occasionally supplementing with formula (when he stays over at his grandparent's house). I had my mom-in-law keep him Friday and Saturday. Friday morning I fed him breastmilk, and again Saturday night. I only expressed a little while I was away from him. Now my milk has almost completely dried up. It's been dwindling for a couple of weeks. But now, my son will drink only a couple of "sips" from one breast and want to switch. I thought it was because it wasnt coming out fast enough to suit him. But when I tried to express it, there was only a tiny bit. Just barely enough to cover the very bottom of a bottle ( and this was from both breasts). I gave him formula all yesterday and called the doctor today. I spoke with the Doctor's Assistant and she says that in fact my milk has dried up and I should not try to get him to suckle anymore. I ask her if it was my fault for supplementing and she said no, that sometimes it just happens. ( She nursed for 10 days and then hers dried up) She also says that I cant get it back. My mom in law seems to think differently. And my husband thinks it's my fault and wants me to go against her wishes and try to get him to breastfeed. I still want to nurse, but I dont know what to do. I know it's better for him. But, if he's not getting anything then I cant nurse. I'm sorry this message is so long but I felt that you needed to know the background behind it. I hope someone can give me some answers. Thanks.
