Rectal pain after episiotomy

From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)

I gave birth four weeks ago. I had an episiotomy. The first week or two I felt little perineal and rectal pain. I had no difficulty passing bowel movements. Since that time it is nearly impossible for me to pass bowel movements because of the pain. It feels like I'm trying to pass a knife or a sharp blade. What is the problem? Will it go away with time? What should I do?
