Re: Daughter's pregnancyFrom: Thomas (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Dec 1998 00:45:31 -0600 (CST)
No it is not unsafe. The problem with sleeping on your back is when you are advanced in your pregnancy (over 28 weeks). This can compress your vena cava which is the blood vessel taking your blood to your heart. Compression can theoretically decrease the blood supply to the baby. However, the mother will be affected long before the baby is. If vena caval compression does occur because she rolls over onto her back at night, her physiology will tell her to move (and may even wake her up feeling dizzy). This would cause removal of the vena caval compression making her feel better. The baby would not be affected until long after this as the baby gets priority as far as the blood supply is concerned. So yes, lying on your back should be avoided but no, you shouldn't worry if you wake up on your back. If you do wake up on your back this may be your natural physiology telling you to move.
