Re: Ultrasound Can Cause Heat Damage?From: steph (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 16 Dec 1998 15:43:36 -0600 (CST)
I am NOT a doctor, but from what I have read and been told by my doctor, it sounds as though what you have read is probably not true. Ultrasounds do not use any type of radiation or x-rays. It uses sound waves to create the picture we see. My doctor had told me that there have been studies (citations I don't know- I trust him and didn't ask) where there have not been a higher incidence of problems or defects in babies where the mothers had very frequent ultrasounds due to problems in the pregnancy. He said his experience also supports this. I have read reports where people have hypothesized that because sound waves can cause particles to move faster (thereby meeting the definition of causing heat- if I recall correctly from science class), they think it would cause problems. In trying to research this on my own, I have not been able to find scientific evidence that supports these claims. This is not to say it's not out there, but definitely not accessable. My basic theory is this: If there were ANY question within the medical field that ultrasounds could cause problems they would not use them routinely unless the baby or mother were in danger. Pragmatically, As litigous as this society is, doctors would be sued left and right for prescribing ultrasounds. on a less pragmatic and more personal level, I think doctors care too much about us and our babies to take that type of a chance- even if the public did demand it so we could see our little ones. Just my own non-medical opinion, Steph
