Re: Fetal HeadFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 16 Dec 1998 12:02:15 EST
In response to your question about the ventricles in the baby's brain. I do ultrasound and it is a routine part of the ultrasound exam to measure the ventricles in the brain. The reason they are doing this is to see if there is a blockage of the fluid that leaves the brain and circulates through the spinal cord. Sometimes there is a blockage of the aqueduct between the 3rd and 4th ventricles that cause this. The measurements that your doctor has gotten are barely above normal. It could be just a technical error in obtaining a true perpendicular cut through the ventricle. When I have seen this abnormality in doing ultrasound it has been obvious that there is a problem with hte baby's head and the ventricles were markedly increased in size. I did have a patient once that had ventricles that measured 11mm, and everything turned out fine. The one thing we must always remember is that nothing is 100% in medicine. Why did they make the cut off 10mm and not 12mm. 2mm isn't very much. I think it's good that your doctor wants to recheck, but I would try to not stress it. Good Luck and God Bless you and your little one. Let me know what you find out. Audrey
