Re: HELLP Syndrome recurring in future pregnanciesFrom: Dr. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 14 Dec 1998 17:12:00 -0600 (CST)
Dear Lori HELLP syndrome is more common in a subsequent pregnancy if you have had it once, but if no underlying cause is found then you are still more likely not to develop it than you are to develop it. Most important with your family history is that you get a specialist to check your clotting system out thoroughly. There are a series on tests known by a range of names (antiphospholipid antibodies, thrombophilia tests etc.) which could show something. Particularly with your history I would be keen to see your Factor 5 Leiden status and your Lupus anticoagulant. Some of these tests only become positive early in pregnancy and so even if they are normal now they need repeating at about 10 and 12 weeks. Hope all the tests are normal and you have an uncomplicated time next pregnancy
