Re: Is it possible to detect baby heartbeat with a stethescope? From: Christine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 27 Nov 1998 19:31:27 -0600 (CST)
Jenn, I tried with my first child and was never able to get a fetal heart beat with a stethoscope. According to my nursing textbooks it says that "ordinarily they become audible by stethoscope at the middle of pregnancy or at approximately the 20th week. If the adominal wall is thin and conditions are favorable, they may be audible as early as the 18th week, but obesity or an excessive quantity of amniotic fluid may render them audible until a much later date." I gained 50lbs with my daughter so that may explain my difficulty in obtaining a HR. I am watching my weight this pg so hopefully eventually I will hear it.
