Re: missed abortions

Dear Annakerie

It is difficult to be certain what if anything is happening. The term missed (abortion) miscarriage is reserved for the situation where ultrasound shows a clear fetal "pole" but no fetal heart pulsation. To be clear the diagnosis should only made with a fetal pole length of >6mm. This type of miscarriage is different to the blighted ovum
(anembryonic pregnancy) where no fetal pole is seen.

Because of the "natural" aspects of miscarriage (nature's quality control?) your chance of being successful in any pregnancy does not diminish significantly until after the third or fourth miscarriage. Equally testing in detail for problems, which is a specialist area, is not very fruitful unless you restrict it to people who have had three miscarriages. Even then you only find a reason in about 3-5% of cases. In most cases the problem may not be correctable! The most significant area of concern is antiphospholipid syndrome (or Reproductive autoimmune failure syndrome RAFS)which needs careful investigation and then treatment in pregnancy.

Try and find a specialist with an interest in recurrent miscarriage and ask them your questions.

Best of luck
