Hello OBGYN.netters!

The November update of Pregnancy & Birth contains a wide variety of new material for your reading pleasure. Come check it out at http://www.obgyn.net/pb/pb.htm

Here are some of our new additions:

CASE FO THE MONTH: Triple Screen by R. Daniel Braun, MD This patient is a 23 year old Gravida 1 who presents for prenatal care at 8 weeks gestation. She has a completely normal history and physical exam is compatible with an 8 week gestation. The pelvis is of normal configuration and size. Lab work reveals Rh positivity, Rubella immunity, and no abnormalities. She is provided with the usual information and given an appointment to return in 4 weeks.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Baby of the Month (yes, that’s MY precious baby!) Do you have a baby to show off? Drop me a note with baby’s and parents’ names along and a photo and your baby will be featured in an upcoming month.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Dr. David Nagey presents two articles; a case for the medical professionals “The Carlyle Crenshaw Perinatal Health Initiative Of The Johns Hopkins Hospital” and for women and patients “OBGYN.net Interview with Dr. Nagey”.

Understanding Grief by OBGYN.net Maternal Grief Correspondent, Marie Allen, PhD, and Shelly Marks, MS. Grief is an emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual response to loss. The depth and the complexity of grief often feel overwhelming and baffling. Unfortunately, arming ourselves with knowledge about grief does not reduce the depth of grief, nor simplify grief.

Dr. Philip Suarez, MD, presents the article “Working Late in Pregnancy Perfectly Fine”. I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that pregnancy is no longer considered a "disease." The bad news? Pregnancy is not a disease, merely a condition.

“Possible Causes and Treatments of Episiotomy Pain” by D. Ashley Hill, MD An episiotomy is a surgical incision into the perineum, the area between the bottom of the vaginal opening and the anus, in order to increase the size of the vaginal opening during childbirth. If it is done as part of gynecologic surgery, it's called a perineorrhaphy.

BABYCENTER FEATURE ARTICLES: Why should I consider getting a CVS test? How is the test performed? Will it hurt? What happens after the test? If the risks are about equal, why would I wait to do an amniocentesis? Is the CVS test any riskier than an amniocentesis? Weighing the benefits of the CVS test

MIDWIFERY MUSINGS: “An Interview with Kathi Wilson, RM, of Thames Valley Midwives, London, Ontario, Canada” is the November article by Deborah Wage, CNM, FNP. This month I am going to introduce what I hope will become a regular feature of Midwifery Musings: an interview with a midwife.

BREASTFEEDING 101: Part 2 of the 3-part article “North American Culture: Undermining Breastfeeding” by Jennifer Taylor Throughout human history, mother and child have entwined their sleep habits. Even today, most of the world's cultures practice some form of parent-infant co-sleeping; however, the United States is not one of them.

SUCCESS STORY: “Letting Faith Fly” by Leigh Morris Jarvis The card I gave my husband, Brent, last January said, “Thank you so much for my wonderful birthday gift. I can’t wait to open it on or around September 25th.” His puzzled look told me I’d have to explain. “I’m pregnant,” I said.
