Re: prenatal vitamins

I am currently trying to get pregnant, I would like to know the minimum requirements for a good >prenatal supplement.

Dear Erin

There is a clear indication for all women trying to get pregnant to be taking 400 micrograms of folic acid per day as this will decrease the chance of spina bifida three fold. If you have a family history of Spina Bifida or are on anti epilepsy medication then the dose should increase to 5 milligrams a day.

Other than this if you have a good diet and have no clearly identified vitamin deficiency then no other supplements are indicated. Once you reach 16 weeks additional iron is still clearly indicated.

Hope you succeed soon.

Ross
