Leann; We do expect to see HCG levels double every 48 hours in the first trimester, but we all have anecdotal stories that we can tell where the lab values and our clinical evaluation did not agree, and the patient went on to a successful pregnancy. My advice is to wait until fri and repeat the scan. If the sac shows no growth, or no fetal pole/yolk sac by 6+ weeks it would be a little more worrisome. HCG levels do not just stop with a miscarriage. They tend to rise slowly, plateau, and then decline. This is why most women "miscarry" about 3-4 weeks after the death of their fetus.
