Re: Chorioamnionitis: Question In response to Dr. Richard Chudacoff

I've read material supporting Dr. Chudacoff's practice of fewer exams (unless in a high-risk situation). My midwife, however, has been practicing for about 20 years. She likes to do an exam at around 32 weeks just in case a woman is having un-detected pre-term labor. After that, she offers to do them at the patient's option. During labor, she told me she routinely checks when she arrives and then again before pushing (unless the Mom is experienced and obviously knows when she needs to push). I think she probably went a little overboard with me (She also checked me before letting me get in the shower later in labor, and I'm a second time Mom and she still insisted on checking me before letting me push.. I KNOW when I need to push ;) OTOH, she gave careful instructions about what to do if your water broke, so as to avoid infection while waiting for labor to begin (including avoiding exams). My previous midwife only checked at 40 weeks, and then again when I arrived for the birth(birthing center). I was at 9 1/2 with a rim by then, so she had me push a little while laying on my side to encourage the rim to go.
