Re: prescription drug usage while pregnantFrom: Thomas (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Oct 1998 00:56:53 -0600 (CST)
Zoloft contains a drug called sertraline hydrochloride which is of a class of drug called a 'selective 5HT reuptake inhibitor'. As it is a relatively new drug then we cannot say with 100% confidence that it cannot cause harm. There have been some rat studies that have shown no effect on organ development but a delay in fetal bone formation. There is also a small increase in fetal loss if taking the drug as is with all antidepressents. The Australian MIMS recomends that the drug only be taken 'if clearly needed'. Perhaps you fall into this category but I would recomend a psychiatrist as the correct specialist to make this decision. PS DRUG BRAND NAMES VARY FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY. IF YOU HAVE A DRUG ENQUIRY IT IS BEST TO READ THE PACKET AND SEE WHAT THE GENERIC NAME FOR THE DRUG IS. THEN MORE DOCTORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
