Typically an amniocentesis is performed around 16 weeks gestation (after the last menstrual period.) It is performed for genetic evaluation of the fetus in patients whom are at high risk for genetic abnormalities (over 35 yo, history of previous genetically abnormal fetus, strong family history of genetics abnormalities, abnormal triple test.)

There are some people whom are doing early amniocenteses (before 14 weeks), but the data suggests that there may be less diagnostic success (cells may not grow or be collected in the same abundance as a later amniocentesis) or there is an increased complication rate.

If you want an earlier diagnostic test, then CVS (chorionic villi sampling) can be performed around 10 weeks. There is also a slightly higher risk of complications but the results are usually back before you begin to show, so actions can be instituted prior to public awareness of pregnancy.
