Last question first. Ask for a different type.

Pregnancy in its earliest stages is in an *all or none* phenomenon. Insults early in pregnancy will either wipe out a pregnancy totally or not affect it at all. (You can check the archives of this list and Women's Health for my previous posts on *all or none*). Chances are you did nothing to adversely affect this pregnancy.

There are some papers about pre-conception folic acid therapy reducing spina bifida. A good level 2 sonogram will be able to evaluate this later in the pregnancy.
